When we embark on the journey to a healthier lifestyle, we tend to tell ourselves to go big or go home. Then a couple of weeks in, you eat a slice of cake or a plate of your favorite pasta and your morale begins to crumble. It sounds crazy not to commit 100 percent to your healthy lifestyle, but I've learned that sometimes, it's okay to shoot for 80 percent.
When I first made the choice to change my eating habits, I was detoxing, both physically and emotionally, from my cancer treatment. Talk about an incentive! For the first year, I did a great job avoiding refined sugar and incorporating more vegetables into every meal. I used NutriBullet to help me achieve my goals and meet my dietary needs. By drinking at least one NutriBlast smoothie a day, I was able to make the transition to a healthier lifestyle.
As time went on, I got more and more comfortable with my routine. I try to eat as healthy as possible whenever I can, even at parties or on vacations. However, I stopped punishing myself for giving into foods that weren’t exactly good for me. I allowed myself to indulge once in a while because I learned that the world wouldn't explode if I ate a piece of cake. And guess what? I haven't gained any of the weight back that I’ve lost since I began using the NutriBullet three years ago.
Many of us want to live a healthier lifestyle, but in reality, it can be difficult. There are days when stress gets the better of us and leads us to not-so-great choices when it comes to food and drinks. We are surrounded by temptations, especially when we are out at social events and restaurants or when we just do not have the time to prepare something nutritious. The key is to not feel guilty when you make those less-than-healthy choices, as long as you continue to work toward your goals at least 80 percent of the time.
People tend to lose motivation when they begin straying from healthy life choices. With regular exercise and a well-balanced diet, however, you can still achieve your health goals, even when you feel like you have taken a step back. Continue eating plenty of fruits and vegetables to get nutrients your body needs and practicing healthy habits, such as exercising regularly and consuming whole foods. It's also important that you set reasonable goals and give yourself some room for minor setbacks.
Obviously, we all want to give 100 percent, but sometimes, life is not going to let that happen so easily. For me, the 80/20 rule is more realistic and has been working well. I spend less time feeling guilty and more time working, accomplishing my healthy living goals!
Here’s to enjoying life and feeling good!
