One of our guiltiest pleasures could be healthier for us than we ever thought possible!
Well, sort of, anyway! Incorporating real cocoa - the dark stuff that's been less processed - into your daily diet has actually been shown to increase your overall health.
According to Dr. Will Clower Ph.D., consuming the right kind of chocolate has been shown to boost memory, attention span, reaction time, and problem-solving skills in a number of different studies by increasing blood flow to the brain. Among other health benefits? It raises good cholesterol, lowers bad cholesterol, and prevents the DNA damage that leads to tumor formation.
BUT - and don't go grabbing that Hershey's bar just yet - the chocolate that's best for you isn't the kind you usually find in your Halloween bucket. It's the darkest, rawest form of chocolate: cacao. This Sacramento Bee article mentions that rich, dark chocolate higher in cocoa content is the kind that affords you these health benefits. We'd take it one step further and say that raw cacao is truly the best; it is highest in cocoa content after all, raw, unprocessed, and pure.
