Ginger, the Mighty Spice!

Ginger is a mighty spice, indeed! Not only does it add great flavor and depth to foods, it also has magical health properties. Ginger has been used in Chinese medicine for over 2,000 years. It continues to be studied at length so we can better understand its amazing healing powers.

Ginger has been shown to be effective against many different health issues. Here is a list of its different medicinal properties:

  • Antibiotic - Ginger's antibiotic effects are powerful. It's been shown to have an antibacterial effect on gut, respiratory and oral infections.
  • Antifungal - Ginger has been found to have antifungal abilities, even against drug-resistant fungi.
  • Asthma
  • Bacterial Diarrhea
  • Cancer - Several studies have shown ginger has the ability to kill several types of cancer cells, including some of the most aggressive and difficult to treat, like lung, ovarian, colon, breast, skin carcinoma, prostate and pancreatic.
  • Diabetes Complications - Ginger can protect nerves in diabetics and lower blood levels.
  • Diabetes Prevention - Ginger studies have shown that regular use can help lower blood sugar, cholesterol and blood fats, which are often related to diabetes progression.
  • Digestive problems - Ginger's ability to ease gastric irritation is well-studied and verified. Additionally, it improves digestive movement by improving intestinal movement and speeding up the emptying of the stomach for those with stomach motility problems.
  • Heart attacks - At least one study demonstrates that ginger extract may help prevent heart attacks.
  • High Blood Pressure
  • Inflammation - Ginger reduces inflammation in gout, rheumatoid arthritis, knee osteoarthritis and some neuro-degenerative diseases.
  • Ischemic strokes - Ginger extract may significantly reduce the damage and help alleviate memory loss.
  • Menstrual Cramping and Pain
  • Nausea and Motion Sickness
  • Neurological urinary incontinence may be helped with ginger salts
  • Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (liver damage due to high fructose intake)
  • Radiation exposure - ginger can help remove radiation from your body
  • Toxicity - Ginger helps prevent the toxic effects of a wide variety of toxins.
  • Ulcers - Intestinal ulcers can be prevented with ginger.

Drug Interactions

Ginger interacts with many drugs. In most cases, there is very little interaction; however, it is best to always ask your doctor or pharmacist if increasing your ginger intake is best for you.

One of my favorite ways to use ginger is in this cleansing and refreshing lemonade.

Ginger Lemonade

Combine the following to 1 gallon of water:

  • Juice from 7 lemons
  • Grate 3 inches of ginger root, put in tea holder and steep in hot water for 10 minutes; add water and ginger to lemon juice
  • 1 tbsp. Braggs apple cider vinegar
  • Stevia to taste

Quick question: After steeping the grated ginger in hot water for 10 minutes, is it the ginger infused water to be added to the lemon juice or the hydrated ginger? Anxiously awaiting a response. Thanks so much!
