The History of US Dietary Guidelines

In 1977, Senator George McGovern released a report entitled Dietary Goals for the United States, hoping to bring awareness to America's quickly changing diet. In it, he stated, "Too much fat, too much sugar or salt, can be and are linked directly to heart disease, cancer, obesity, and stroke, among other killer diseases." He wanted the government to acknowledge that food could be the cause behind the country's ailing health, but those in the food industry were not happy. Dr. Michael Greger of NutritionFacts.org sheds more light on this historic report and the devastating repercussions the lack of effective dietary public policy has had on the nation's health.
