Arthritis is basically joint inflammation and is not a single disease, but a group of multiple medical conditions that fit under the same umbrella. The most common form is osteoarthritis (OA), which affects mainly the elderly. However, arthritis is not limited to that population nor does it have one particular cause.
Most Common Types of Arthritis
• Osteoarthritis – When cartilage loses its elasticity, it becomes stiff and easily damaged. Over time, it wears away, leaving no cushion between bones and causing severe pain due to constant friction. In addition, the tendons and ligaments become stretched, causing additional pain.
• Rheumatoid arthritis – This type of arthritis is inflammatory in nature. It arises when the synovial membrane that produces the nourishing synovial fluid is attacked and becomes inflamed and painful. Fingers, arms, legs and wrists are most commonly affected.
• Infectious arthritis – “Infectious” denotes a bacterial, viral, or fungal invasion. When these pathogens spread through the bloodstream, they may set up shop and infect a joint, usually the knee, shoulder, elbow, wrist, and/or finger. This type usually affects those who already suffer from some form of arthritic joint condition.
