One of the oldest cultivated whole grains, barley can be found in a variety of forms. The fiber may help lower cholesterol more effectively than oat fiber. This grain has also been shown to help control blood sugar and contains more protein and less starchy carbs than other grains such as corn, brown rice, millet and rye. This whole grain is a great source of the antioxidant selenium and contains tryptophan, which converts to the sleep-inducing melatonin.
