Grapefruits

Have you heard of the grapefruit diet? Grapefruit's fat blasting properties have been attributed to its ability to regulate insulin levels and satiate appetites. Grapefruit is a vitamin C powerhouse and a rich source of lycopene, an important antioxidant for prostate health. Eat it, juice it, garnish with it, this mega-fruit can be your heart's best friend since it's been shown to decrease bad cholestorol and triglycerides. It's also been shown to reduce the likelihood of forming calcium oxalate kidney stones. However, be cautious if taking prescription medications - grapefruit can increase the potency of the medication and cause harmful side effects. To prepare grapefruit for your NutriBlast, wash the outer peel (even though it will be removed, bacteria may be transferred to the flesh when slicing with a knife), remove skin and scoop out sections with a spoon.

Selection Process

Look for grapefruits that have yellow skin with a slightly pink tint. Don't be alarmed by blemishes on the skin - those sometimes occur when the fruit rubs up against other fruits or branches on the tree. And they're ready to be eaten as soon as they're picked, so no need to wait for them to ripen. It is also advised to choose one that is heavy for its size and emits a slightly sweet aroma. Store grapefruit at room temp for about one week or in the fridge for 2-3 weeks.
