There's a reason walnuts look like tiny brains; they are powerful sources of omega-3 fatty acids that have been shown to help improve brain health and memory. A one ounce serving provides 2.5g ALA (the plant-based source of omega-3), 4g protein, and 2 grams of fiber, along with a dose of magnesium and phosphorus for bone health. It has been shown that those who include a serving of nuts a day have more success at losing or maintaining a healthy weight. Walnuts contain gamma-tocopherol, an especially heart-healthy form of vitamin E. Walnuts also boast the highest antioxidant content of any nut and contain anti-inflammatory compounds.

Selection Process

Walnuts can be purchased still in the shell, which should be removed before adding to your NutriBlast. They should not be cracked or stained. Shelled walnuts are available prepackaged and in bulk bins. Avoid walnuts that appear rubbery or shriveled and if possible, be sure they do not emit a rancid odor. Walnuts are highly perishable due to their high polyunsaturated fat content, so store in a sealed container in the refrigerator where they should be good for about six months or up to a year in the freezer.
