Peppery taste?

Hi - today's NB was what I had to hand:

baby spinach; cherry toms; celery; kiwi; nectarine; pineapple; blueberries and strawberries -- all topped with cold water.

Most of the fruit was frozen.

It was really tasty but had a marked peppery taste. Any ideas what might cause this and I'll put less in next time.

Hmmm...interesting. I am not sure what might be causing the peppery taste. Maybe there was another type of lettuce in your spinach by accident? Arugula often lends a peppery flavor. Otherwise you may just need to do some experimenting if you wanted to get to the bottom of it. Also, make sure your water is filtered...it could be coming from something in that.
Hello Judith. Funny you should mention that "peppery" taste. I taste that too now and then and was also wondering what causes it (I don't like it much). As a matter of fact, I taste it right now as I drink my Blast. I was beginning to blame the Chia seeds, but I really don't think those are peppery (and you didn't put any in your blast). Some things we have in common in my Blast and yours are: Celery, Kiwi, Pineapple and Blueberries. I wonder if when you mix two fruits together you get a peppery taste. Like Kiwi and Pineapple, or something like that. I'm going on-line to investigate... Be right back... OK, I found this: "Back in culinary school, in the lecture about puréed fresh fruit sauces, they told us never to make one out of kiwi. They said the seeds would give the sauce a peppery flavor, and that would be bad." Sounds like we found our culprit! -Steve
Hiya - I've also found various references online Seems Kiwi - also pineapple :( - have something called raphides or calcium oxalate crystals that can cause an irritation. But then spinach and swiss chard have calcium oxalate too. Looks like if you dig too deep you'll not be meant to include anything. But I think you're right, that kiwi is the culprit. Funny, I don't have the same feeling when I eat the whole fruits. Maybe it's when it's zapped. Time to adjust my recipes cos like you, I don't care much for that taste. Good thought about rocket Krista, but the spinach was from my garden and no rocket there! Thanks for the feedback guys. Judith

It's the kiwi (most likely the seeds in particular) that are causing that back-of-the-tongue peppery taste 😃
