Is raw spinach bad for you?

Many of the NutriBullet recipes call for raw spinach.  But I read that it is very bad to eat raw spinach and that it can cause kidney stones.  What is the truth?  Thank you

Donna raw spinach is a super food and very healthy however it contains oxalic acid which can bind with calcium. All leafy green have oxalic acid. Unless you have been diagnosed with a kidney disorder and the doctor has said not to eat spinach, by all means eat it! Most people's body can get ride of the oxalic acid just fine and never have any issues. Some people that eat the typical American diet eat foods that lack necessary nutrients that help remove the oxalic acid thus causing the oxalic acid to bind with calcium potentially causing Kidney stones. I eat a lot of raw spinach and have for years. Just wash it good, buy organic and enjoy the health benefits. I hope this helps. Healthy Wishes wally Bishop C.N.C.

thank you - and no, have not been diagnosed with any kidney problems.
Hi I have all thesyptoms of Kidney stones and am convinced I have them . I have embarked on a Nutriblast lifestyle , and I love my smoothies , but I am concerned , as seem to be having all the things that contain this oxalic acid . ie Spinach (I have it every day and kale , strawberries and nuts . I thought I was doing all the right things please advise if you can as I feel a bit deflated now . Many Thanks in advance
While the easiest way to help prevent kidney stones would be to avoid or greatly reduce the consumption of foods high in oxalic acid, I understand you don't want to miss out on all the other nutrients packed in those foods. While it isn't 100% full proof, some suggestions to help minimize the potential for stones include: Drink plenty of water (fluid) each day 8-13 cups a day - especially before a high oxalic acid meal, avoid calcium supplements (unless a Dr. advised you to) but keep eating calcium-rich foods, keep salt and animal proteins low, cook your leafy greens (also adding calcium carbonate to your greens while cooking removes even more oxalate - 1 tsp of powder per pot of water). In addition, you can choose to Blast healthy foods that are low in oxalates. LOW OXALATE FOODS Fruits: Apples, avocados, banana, cherries, cranberries, melons (cantaloupe, honeydew, watermelon), seedless grapes (red and green), peaches, pear, plums. Vegetables: Asparagus, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, cucumbers; iceberg and Romaine lettuce; radishes, mushrooms, onions (yellow and white); squash (zucchini, acorn, and yellow); red sweet peppers, turnips (root), water chestnuts. Beverages: Spring and filtered water, chamomille tea, ginger ale, beer, apple juice, apple cider. Grains: White and wild rice; barley. Herbs and Spices: Basil, cilantro, mustard, nutmeg, white pepper, saffron, tarragon, vanilla, salt. Nuts, Peas and Seeds: Coconut; black-eyed peas, green peas, and yellow split peas; flax seeds.
