Can I eat chard and spinach stems?

I have been buying my Rainbow Chard and Spinach in large bunches.  They always have a long stem on them.  Is it alright to just shove the whole thing in there stem and all?  That Chard has a pretty beefy stem on it.  I usually cut that off.  Should I be leaving it on?  Is there much nutritional value in the stem?

Official Answer

Absolutly. They are more fibrous but hold nutrients! Obviously if the stem is huge just use what seems reasonable. But there is nutrition there.
