Can I use the rind of citrus fruits?

I've seen pros and cons about including the rind of citrus fruits in smoothies.  Some experts say the toxic chemicals sprayed on citrus fruit while on the tree is highly carcinogenic.  Nutribullet recipes indicate extracting both the fruit AND rind.  Does scrubbing the rind get rid of harmful chemicals?  Please advise.

If using the rind, buy organic and be sure to wash it thoroughly... some people just don't like the bitter taste so it is up to you if you wish to include them or not. There are beneficial properties found in the zest/rind. I like to add just a little zest to get some benefits, but less bitterness. here's a great article to help with washing ideas:
