Is it safe to give young children smoothies?

Would it be safe to give young children like 3 or 6 years old smoothies like yogurt and a banana in it or maybe fruit like strawberries and cherries?

Official Answer

Introducing your kids to fruits and veggies is one of the healthiest things you can do for them. It will help them re-program their taste buds and will help them like veggies. All of the recipes are appropriate for children. I would avoid recipes with cacao, maca and green tea as those ingredients contain natural caffeine and can promote increased energy.

My kids are now 5 and 7. I started giving them smoothies probably when my older one was around 3 or 4 as a way to get them fruits, veggies, and a little extra protien bc they are such picky eaters. I usually use plain vanilla yogurt as a base and then add fruit and other things. I can now add veggies and they still love them. But I do use enough fruit to mask the taste of the veggies. I bought the nutribullet bc my son hates the texture of seeds in his smoothies, I was hoping it would grind those down for him. ( for things like raspberries) You could always start with simple recipes like just fruit and yogurt and see how the like them. But my picky eaters love them!
My son is the same way as Elexis when it comes to texture. A straw helps sometimes. Since I started my son drinking vegi-fruit blends at 6, after he's been drinking fruit smoothies for years, he sometimes is hesitant to drink it cause it is green. So don't be surprised if your 3 year old drinks a green drink right up and 6 year old just looks at it. Always a pleasure to have my son help make the drink. Those he always drinks! With kids please keep in my mind it is not recommended to add protein powder to their drink. Not a dietitian BTW. Peace & Love
