When a recipe calls for crushed mint or thyme leaves, how do you do that?

There a lot of essential oils in herbs like mint or thyme that can provide the flavors that we are looking for. What you can do it either use a mortar and pestle and smash the leafs to release it or use the back of a spoon smash the leaves in the bowl. It is pressing on the leafs until the leaves are a little broken down. It doesn't have to be smooth.
