Dietitian's Answer

Yes, your metabolism does slow down when you sleep. Technically, your metabolic rate or metabolism is dependent on how fast you breath. When we sleep, our heart rate slows and so does our breathing therefore our metabolic rate also slows. Conversely, when we exercise, our heart rate rises and so does our breathing therefore our metabolic rate also increase. In general, whenever we are moving, our metabolic rate is higher than when we are idle.
