Signs and Symptoms

Diabetes is a metabolic disease marked by consistently high blood sugar levels. There are three types of diabetes, which are usually classified by stage of development or how the body responds to elevated glucose (sugar) levels. Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is an autoimmune disease which results from the body’s inability to produce insulin. Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus is primarily due to lifestyle factors and genetics and is indicated by insulin resistance, a condition whereby cells are unable to properly utilize insulin for glucose uptake and energy production. The third form is gestational diabetes, in which pregnant women not previously diagnosed develop elevated blood sugars. After giving birth, blood sugar levels may normalize or they may develop into Type 2 DM.

Lifestyle factors, like diet and exercise, play a huge role in the prevention of Type 2 Diabetes and can also help manage and control all types of diabetes once diagnosed. Type 1 is treated with insulin, exercise and diet, while Type 2 is first treated with a weight reduction regimen, diet, and then medication.
