Signs and Symptoms

Insomnia is a common sleep disorder classified by trouble falling asleep, staying asleep, or both. Chronic insomnia may last for several months and can lead to minor or severe side effects such as anxiety, hormone imbalance, depression, chronic fatigue, weight gain, lack of focus and attention, worsened memory, increased risk for heart disease, or accidents. Insomnia may be secondary to stress, medical conditions, or medications, or it may be a primary condition, but it is a distinct disorder that is not yet fully understood.

There are no known treatment plans, although a combination of relaxation exercises, diet, and medication, such as sleeping pills, can help ease the effects of insomnia.
